A Year of Mental Health Resources

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five U.S. adults experience a mental illness or a mental health disorder. While millions of people in the U.S. are affected by mental illness each year, the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health is collaborating with TTUHSC renowned mental health care professionals to provide credible resources and advice to help women identify and address mental health needs.

Meet Our Experts

Dr. Sarah Wakefield

Dr. Sarah Wakefield

Sarah Mallard Wakefield, M.D., serves as the chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC). She is a fellowship trained child and adolescent and forensic psychiatrist, and she is a member of the American Psychiatry Association (APA), the American Academy is Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) and much more.

 

In recent years, Dr. Wakefield's work has revolved around relational psychiatry. She has given presentations regarding children's mental health, perinatal mental health and juvenile justice. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry.

 

 


 

 

 
Dr. Sarah Wakefield

Dr. Stephanie Moses

Stephanie Moses, Ph.D. is a practicing clinical psychologist in the Permian Basin at Texas Tech Physicians. She serves at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center as an associate professor, Director of Behavioral Health and the Creator and Director for the Family Medicine Mental Health Fellowship.

 

Moses has a special interest in reducing the stigma of mental health conditions among people of color. She additionally has several areas of expertise including providing individual, group, and family psychotherapy involving concerns of postpartum depression, trauma, relationship issues, abuse, anxiety, body image and more. In addition to her many roles at TTUHSC and Texas Tech Physicians, she is the author of the book, "In Session" which addresses mental health among women of color. Dr. Moses works to challenge the stigma of having a mental illness and getting treatment for it.

 

 


 

 

 
Dr. Sarah Wakefield

Dr. Amy Stark

Dr. Amy Stark, M.D., is a homegrown doc, having graduated medical school from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 2013. In 2018, after completing general psychiatry training at the Mayo Clinic and addiction training at Yale University School of Medicine, she rejoined TTUHSC as an associate professor in the department of psychiatry in Amarillo, Texas. She also serves as the psychiatry clerkship director for the medical students on the Amarillo campus.

 

Dr. Stark's areas of expertise and professional interests include opioid use disorder and medication assisted treatment; alcohol use disorder; mood disorders; anxiety disorders; and psychiatry for specialty populations, including peripartum women and the LGBT community.
